  • What is Ubuntu

    Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù]) is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity". It is sometimes translated as "I am because we are" (also "I am because you are"), or "humanity towards others" (Zulu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu).

    Employment Equity can be used as an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women through explicit actions, policies or programs.

    Policies and practices rooted in Canadian institutions such as, education, health care, and justice that mirror and reinforce beliefs, attitudes, prejudice, stereotyping and/or discrimination towards people of African descent.

  • What is the meaning of Aboriginal Peoples

    The descendants of the original inhabitants of North America. “Aboriginal Peoples” can be used to collectively describe three groups recognized in the Consitution Act, 1982: First Nation/Indians, Inuit, and Métis”. These are separate peoples with unique histories, languages, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and political goals.

    The word “Aboriginal” is an umbrella term for all three peoples, and is not interchangeable with “First Nations” but can be used interchangeably with “Indigenous peoples”, a collective name for the original peoples of North America and their descendants. It should also not be used when referring to only one or two of the three recognized groups.

    Definition of Black-led and Black-focused. A Black-led organization is an organization with: leadership positions (Director, Founders, etc.) primarily occupied by people who self-identify as Black (minimum two-thirds) a governance structure (advisory board, eldership circle, volunteer committee, etc.)

  • What is Community of Practice?

    A Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of individuals who share a common interest, profession, or domain of knowledge and come together to actively engage in learning, sharing experiences, and collaborating to develop their expertise in that specific area. CoPs provide a platform for members to connect, exchange insights, best practices, and knowledge, ultimately enhancing their collective understanding and competence within the chosen domain.

    Key characteristics of a Community of Practice include:

    1. Shared Domain: Members of a CoP are united by a common area of interest, expertise, or practice, whether it’s a profession, hobby, or a particular field of knowledge.
    2. Community: A sense of belonging and mutual engagement is at the heart of a CoP. Members build relationships, collaborate, and interact with one another on a regular basis.
    3. Practice: CoPs are focused on sharing practical knowledge and experiences. Members actively work together to develop and apply their expertise in real-world contexts.
    4. Learning: Learning is a central goal of a CoP. Members learn from each other, from shared experiences, and from the collective wisdom of the community, often through informal interactions, discussions, and problem-solving.
