SPOTLIGHT

The Fundamentals of Impactful Non-Profit Leadership course officially wrapped up on November 6, 2025, and we couldn’t be more proud of this first cohort.

Designed to strengthen Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused (B3) organizations, this program equipped 17 nonprofit professionals with practical leadership tools in governance, strategy, financial management, culture-building, and more. (A few couldn’t join us on picture day — but you were definitely missed!)

What the Program Offered
Over seven intensive weeks, learners completed online modules and attended in-person sessions facilitated by Black nonprofit leaders from across the sector. The learning was hands-on, community-informed, and grounded in sustainability and long-term organizational growth.
Participants walked away with:

  • a stronger professional network
  • practical toolkits to apply immediately
  • ongoing mentorship
  • renewed confidence in their ability to lead in the community

Our Guiding Theme has been to equip our communities to address their own challenges — with relatable experts, safe learning spaces, and practical tools grounded in Black excellence.

Program Highlights
Beyond the content, some of the most memorable moments came from:

  • laughing together over shared meals
  • exchanging lived experiences as community builders
  • challenging our assumptions through new ideas and frameworks

This wasn’t just a course — it became a gathering place for honest conversation and collective growth.

What Learners Said:
How has your understanding of non-profit leadership changed since starting this program?
“Before the training, I had a strong understanding due to previous roles. However, the training reinforces the challenges that one can face at times and the need to keep pushing.” – Fall 2025 Learner

Which facilitator(s) or session(s) had the greatest impact on your learning, and why?
“Sharnelle Morgan and Kema Joseph had the greatest impact on my learning because I learned about government relationships better and how to approach politicians. I also learned about the importance of getting a topic I care about on the government agenda.” – Fall 2025 Learner

What’s one key takeaway or skill you’ll apply to your current or future work?
“One key takeaway is how important it is to have a strong board for my non-profit. I am working on inviting certain board members for my organization for next year.” – Fall 2025 Learner

Key Learnings
Participants explored foundational nonprofit questions, and many have already begun applying their new knowledge. — watch for their work in the community!

Ontario has launched a consultation for the next Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS). As you’ve likely seen, the government is offering only a six-week window for input.

Given the short timeframe, Maytree is working with many of its partners to coordinate a joint letter from organizations across the province. Their goal is to mount a coordinated, large-scale response that reflects the urgency of this issue.

This call-out invites you to sign on and to share this letter across your networks. The deadline to sign is Friday, November 28.

Click here to read the letter
Click here to add your organization

Why this is important:

  • Collective strength matters. A shared message from many organizations is harder to ignore.
  • Capacity shouldn’t be a barrier. Many organizations are stretched thin, and a joint letter gives the option for more voice to be included. For those with capacity to do more, this letter is meant to augment, not replace, any individual submission you plan to make.
  • Networks amplify impact. If you choose to sign, please also consider forwarding the letter to partner organizations. One signatory is good; ten more from your network is even better.
  • This is just the beginning. Ontario will need sustained, coordinated advocacy on poverty in the years ahead. Working together now helps us build relationships and momentum.

What’s next
Maytree will send the letter and full signatory list to the Premier and submit it to the consultation process before it closes on November 30. After the consultation, they will look for opportunities to build on this initiative through other engagement and advocacy on poverty reduction.

Madman Summit: Behind the Mask of Masculinity
This summit creates space for honest, critical conversations around masculinity, identity, healing, and accountability. Through dialogue, reflection, and community exchange, participants will examine how social expectations around masculinity affect mental health, relationships, and leadership, and explore healthier, more authentic ways of showing up in the world.
